Vaughn Morris – President, CEO

Vaughn is a graduate of Fort Lewis College. Vaughn has been part of the Boys & Girls Club movement for over 20 years and was recruited to open the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County in 2007. Vaughn serves as the president of the United Way of Southwest Colorado, a trustee of the Pine River Library and treasurer of the Durango Chamber of Commerce. Vaughn is a graduate of the Leadership La Plata Program and the Boys & Girls Club of America Harvard School of Business Leadership program. Vaughn enjoys all aspects of sports from participant to referee to spectator.

Kathrene Frautschy – Director of Development

A graduate of DePaul University Chicago, Kathrene has been a part of Durango’s non-profit community for 20 years. Working with individuals and business leaders with a heart for kids, Kathrene sees development work as the opportunity to assist people in doing what is “imprinted on their hearts…making a difference in the lives of others.” Kathrene’s newest hobby is knitting, creating warm and cozy items using hand dyed wool fibers.

Ximena Hernandez – Membership Coordinator

Se Habla Espanol. A high school senior, Ximena is preparing for a career in the field of special education. Ximena serves as the Club’s bi-lingual liaison, assisting parents, guardians and Spanish speaking Club members. Ximena is the 2020 Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County Youth of the Year. Ximena enjoys spending time with family, which includes paddle boarding area waters.

Jerad Bussell – Teen Coordinator

Jerad is a graduate of Fort Lewis College, with a degree in Anthropology. Jerad leads teen Club members in a wide array of programs and activities, providing a safe place where teens investigate careers and hobbies, try new experiences, and can simply be teens, with a supportive network of peers. Jerad renews his spirit fly fishing, hiking, gardening and dehydrating fruits and veggies. Jerad’s aspiration is to operate a summer “mountain experience camp” for kids.

Melissa McKnight-Site Coordinator, THE CLUB at Big Picture High School

Melissa McKnight is a native of Oregon. Melissa leads the Club’s outreach program benefiting students at Big Picture High School, a resource for academic support, career exploration, and a safe place to simply “be” in a spirit of community. Additionally, Melissa is the Office Manager at New York Life Insurance Co. In between dirt bike adventures, Melissa is a real & rod enthusiast, enjoys baking and is a big fan of Tacos Nayarit. Melissa’s son Patriot is THE CLUB at Big Picture High School’s 2020 Youth of the Year.

Peter Behm – Program Specialist

Peter is a graduate of Fort Lewis College, with a degree in English. He fell in love with writing at a young age and aspires to be a writer. Peter is an avid bike enthusiast and especially enjoys riding his bike around Vallecito Reservoir. His favorite reading spot is 81301 Coffee House and Roasters. Peter operates from a coaching perspective, and “hopes to inspire Club members to push themselves to be the best individuals they can be.” Peter is frequently in the gym running healthy lifestyle programs or the tech lab, guiding Club members in academic enrichment activities.


Ian Hanigan – On Special Assignment at Animas Valley Elementary School

Currently a student at Fort Lewis College, Ian will graduate in 2020 with a degree in Mathematics and Elementary Education. “I enjoy how math is another language which anyone can learn! I love working with kids, applying the academic classroom training methods I am learning at FLC with the youth development training that is core to our Club staff training, to make a difference in the lives of our Club members.” In his free time, Ian enjoys skiing Purgatory, swimming in area lakes, floating the river with college friends and reading thriller novels.


Sam Lewarchick – AmeriCorps

Sam is a native of Cleveland and graduate of North Arizona University. Sam committed to service through AmeriCorps, a national service program that encourages members to commit their time to addressing critical community needs, including working with kids to support academic achievement, programs that address poverty, sustainability in national parks, disaster relief and more. AmeriCorps volunteers pledge to a year of service. Sam loves exploring the mountains with his dog Zeplin and is a disc golf competitor.
